Project Description

 Kibuye, Kisumu.
 22nd – 27th March 2010
Retirement Benefits Authority in partnership with Operation Eardrop Kenya held the second CSI JuaKali Hearing Conservation Ear Clinic in Kibuye, Kisumu from 22nd – 27th March 2010. During the 6 days event, a total of 1,200 jua kali artisans were assessed. Each jua kali worker underwent the process of registration, ear examination, hearing assessment and was issued with a pair of earplugs. A noise survey of the jua kali sheds was also conducted. The event was officially launched by the Provincial Commissioner of Nyanza Province.

RBA donated a computer and printer to the Kibuye Jua Kali Association.

22% of the workers examined were found to have disabling hearing impairment. The percentage is similar to that which was obtained in the pilot project in Kamukunji,Nairobi which showed that 20 % of the workers had disabling hearing impairment. This percentage is way above what is found in the general population. The results of the noise survey indicate that 75% of the workers are exposed to hazardous occupational noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A),on a daily basis.
