Operation Ear Drop Kenya (OED-K) is a charitable non-profit making organization founded in 2003 to provide preventive, surgical and rehabilitative services to the hearing impaired Kenyans with emphasis on children from underprivileged backgrounds. OED-Kenya is dedicated to promote hearing health and education in Kenya. Our hearing health rehabilitation programs and activities provide practical solutions for hearing loss/deafness which imposes a huge social and economic burden on the society.
Hearing impairment is one of the commonest disabilities in the world and is often referred to as the hidden disability. It is for this reason that children with hearing difficulties tend to be unidentified and under-served. Hearing is critical to speech and language development, communication and learning. Children with hearing loss or auditory processing problems have a problem with development of speech and communication skills. The language and communication deficit causes learning problems that result in reduced academic achievement; social isolation and low self esteem and it may have an impact on career development and vocational choices.
The ultimate impact of hearing loss is determined by the stage at which it occurs in a child’s life, when the problem is identified and when intervention begins. It is therefore a noble cause for Operation Ear Drop Kenya to reduce this numbers and the effects of hearing loss through applying preventive, curative and intervention strategies.
